Interestingly, i also happen to know couple really successful astronomers back in Ukraine, both female. highly cited and all. We just need to remember that this road was not always open for them though. This is well described in the book, actually. The heroine chose Switzerland because uni's there took in female students, and it was a rarity in Europe back then.
