Diana Weinhold. "Enjoy the silence - on the cost of noise"
1. Studies on noise pollution - as a component of the current trend of the so-called "happiness research"
2. Noise as one of the notions that are hard to quantify.
3. urbanization - denser living - noise pollution - research of it: which started from doctors and thru psychologists to economy people
4. not just people, animals suffer from noise in the cities along with us
5. noise causes, first of all, cardio problems and high aggression
6. Noise pollution as an externality: not just the person who's actually making the noise, is suffering from it, people around also do
7. One of the approaches to measure the noise is simply to ask people: how much are they willing to pay to reduce the noise level? Though this is too subjective. People might not be aware of how much they are really willing to.
8. Hedonic house price regression: 2 similiar houses, but of them is located near the airport. The second one would be 10-20% cheaper.
9. There can't be any perfect state of information about the actual level of noise when you'are buying a house.
10. Cost of noise reduction vs. Cost of moving to a different location. Sometimes the later would be higher, then people would agree to the first.
11. Observable factors of noise pollution: location, road, transport etc. - you can see them when you are moving in, so you are more or less ready for that. Unobservabla factors: neighbours. That would be a surprise when you are already moved in :)
12. Drastic difference in the levels of tolerance to noise. There are more and less sensitive to noise people.
13. in the so-called "happiness regression" noise is just of one variables to measure how happy you are.
14. There are just people who ALWAYS COMPLAIN, whenever asked, on any issues. They spoil the stats :) The question is : how many % of these "compainers" are present in a nation??
15. HAPPY PEOPLE EARN MORE. and it's not vice versa. Never works vice versa.
16. Ok, real digits now. Survey of 2008, 28 countries, 26 ths. people. From them - 1.4 complain on "much noise".
17. Finance digits: depending on the country in the survey, people are willing to pay from 60 usd up till 100 usd to reduce the noise in the apartments and around.
18. Applying some additional creativity, one can try to measure the "political noise" using the same pattern: political noise - starting from small talk in Parliament and up to revolutions and demonstrations.
19. National differences in attitude to noise in general. Both for producing noise :) and tolerating noise. Interrelationship between them might be interesting.
20. The major conclusion: builders must be financially punished for what they do.
21. Simply because people in huge cities are more stressed, they tend to complain more about it.
22. People of same age, same income, same profession etc. - if living in urban areas, are less happy. And partially because of the noise issue.
23. If rated (grading) - noise issue usually comes... third in importance! Right after health and marriage. And even before kids issue.
24. Studying separately the housewives: they spend more time at homes - less care about the noise. Partially - because they are more used to neighbours sounds, partially - because they are more calm and less stressed out.
25. What rich people call noise - and what poor people call noise - are two very different levels of noise. For measuring it properly, you'd better eliminaty the rich :) the upper 1/3. Simply because their complain are not that reasonable.
26. Generally, no objective measure for noise. Country-fixed effects, first of all.
